budget laptops aren’t pretty. If they’re as efficient as top laptops however their lack of luxuries isn’t a problem.

What if a low-cost laptop was much more powerful than the more costly laptops? For instance, much more than the expensive laptops?

This is the case with the $650 Acer Swift 3. It’s the first model to make use of the brand-new Ryzen 4000 processors that come with eight cores with eight threads. Intel laptops that have eight cores are typically priced at more than $2000. The Swift 3 introduce a new level of performance and efficiency for low-cost laptops?

Pros

  • Apple’s M1 blasts Intel away
  • The battery’s life is awe-inspiring
  • Great keyboard and touchpad
  • Quality build that is solid and sturdy
  • Simple good looks

Cons

  • Only one external display is supported.

Performance

It’s the reason for the fame of AMD’s 3rd-gen Ryzen7 processors. This is what sets them apart in comparison to the usual Intel products. 8 cores across the board isn’t a joke. It’s more than twice what you’ll find on the 10th generation Intel chip. You’ll need to upgrade to the Intel Core i9 laptop like the Dell XPS 15 to gain eight cores, which isn’t found in laptops this compact.

It’s a tiny laptop. It sports a 14-inch display It weighs 2.65 kilograms and weighs 0.63 inches thick. It’s not as thick as its MacBook Pro. It’s a brand new 13.2-inch MacBook Pro. It has the same number of cores as the $1,799 16-in MacBook Pro.

What’s the reason that core count matters so significantly? Four additional cores could theoretically transform this comparatively small amount made of magnesium into something more efficient. More cores mean higher performance in the most critical tasks that many laptops with budget prices aren’t good at. Applications from the Adobe suite are a great illustration. In most cases, they’ll utilize the same number of processing cores as they can get.

I have tested this using an encoder for video using Handbrake. It was amazing how fast the Acer Swift 3 finished transcoding an HD movie trailer in only 2.5 minutes. It’s more than 50 per cent more efficient than it’s Intel version of the identical laptop. It’s a big difference. this is the kind of performance that four cores could bring you. It’s also 21 per cent more efficient than that of the 13-inch XPS that I’ve been praising for how hard it is pushing the quad-core processor.

It’s not able to be competitive with other laptops that have eight cores. The Core i9 processor in the laptop’s 16-inch MacBook Pro encoded the video at 24% faster over Swift 3. Swift 3. It’s Ryzen 7 4900H inside the ROG Zephyrus G14 was 33% more efficient.

There are two explanations for this. The second one is the fact that Acer Swift 3 uses the Ryzen 7 4700U, which is a 15-watt unit. A lower power of thermal design is a lower headroom performance. This alone is why a laptop that has a processor of 35 watts, like the Asus Zephyrus G14 is better. It’s not the only one. Ryzen 7 4700U also doesn’t feature simultaneous multi-threading. The majority of 8-core competitors do have this, which is why the cores of their 8 processors function in the role of 16 virtual cores.

I haven’t yet tested this model. Ryzen 7 4800U, with 16 threads, but it’s not available for Swift 3. Swift 3. For a price of $20 less, Acer sells a model equipped with 6 cores, the Ryzen 5 4500U. Although it comes with 8GB of RAM, which is comparable to that of the Ryzen 7 model, it only comes with only 256GB of SSD storage, which is less than the model I reviewed, which has 512GB. Therefore, the price of the upgrade is worth it.

The built-in Radeon graphics are extremely powerful when compared with Intel’s Iris graphics. It was able to play the game Rocket League with the Swift 3 in 1080p with Quality settings (the game’s moderate settings) with close to 60 frames per second. These graphics are a huge improvement over integrated graphics from previous years however they’re not able to turn Swift 3 into a gaming laptop. Swift 3 into a gaming laptop.

Display as well as keyboards and touchpads.

A laptop priced at $650 must make some compromises and there’s no way around it. The Swift 3’s biggest omission will be its display.

The screen is 14 inches in size and 1080p which is poor in every aspect. The color range is limited to 64 per cent of the sRGB scale and the color accuracy is abysmal. This doesn’t affect the experience of watching movies and doesn’t hinder working. This can be a problem when you are doing any work which involves color regardless of whether it’s editing videos, photography, as well as graphic designing.

What’s the point of fast video editing speed If you’re not confident in the quality of the colors displayed on your monitor? It’s a shame that the Swift 3 isn’t ideal for photography or videography due to this reason. It could run these apps but you’ll need to connect an external monitor to ensure exact color.

The screen also appears dim. It’s maxed out at 233 units of brightness. Many budget laptops feature screens with more than 300 units. This can be a problem when you’re working in a bright area.

Another major issue is appearance and feeling. Its design and feel aren’t great. Acer Swift 3 isn’t ugly but it does suffer from the obvious laptop problems that are priced at a low. The bottom bezel is hefty and covers the screen in the form of a black, textured. The keyboard deck and lid appear to be made of aluminium while the body is covered with stickers that are difficult to take off. The backlighting underneath the keyboard appears a bit off. It’s pretty bright, however, there’s no light below the space bar which is strange.

Then there’s the touchpad that was my biggest issue in trying to make use of Swift 3. Swift 3 as my daily driver. It’s made of plastic, does not track well, and comes with an extremely very loud click mechanism. This is what I’ve come to expect from touchscreens on laptops less than 800 dollars.

It’s a little bigger than other laptops with a budget it also supports Windows Precision gestures. It’s not even centered in the notebook, which can take some time to get used to.

Moving onto the keyboard. It’s definitely one of the most enjoyable features that come with this Swift 3. There’s plenty of room to move without the keys becoming mushy. Keys have a nice bottoming out motion and the layout is comfy. The fingerprint scanner can be found beneath the arrow keys to the right side, however, there’s the absence of a Windows Hello IR camera.

Battery life, ports and the bloatware

Battery life is yet another area where laptops that are budget-friendly are more likely to fail. It’s true that the Acer Swift 3 isn’t great in this respect. It’s only able to last for about eight hours with light use However, in my typical routine, it took less than six hours. You’ll benefit more from premium laptops, like those like the Dell XPS 13, or even the ZenBook 13 UX333.

For an entry-level laptop at this price, it’s a good performer. In fact, it’s Ryzen 7 is the best model. Ryzen 7 model actually outlasts the Intel model by about 45 minutes.

The port selection is one of the major disadvantages of laptops with lower specs. There are plenty of choices in this laptop, however, the ports aren’t exactly modern. You’ll get one HDMI port as well as two USB-A ports and one USB-C connector. However, it’s powered by an exclusive barrel plug, because USB-C ports don’t allow power throughput. The Intel-powered Swift 3 comes with Thunderbolt 3support, despite it costing just $700.

Finally, there’s bloatware. It’s everywhere as if to remind you of how good a bargain you’ve gotten. It’s not difficult to remove it however, between Norton, ExpressVPN, Farm Heroes Saga, GoTrust ID and Acer’s proprietary applications, it’s frustrating.

Our perspective

The idea of eight cores in a $500 laptop sounds too impressive to be real. It’s not. It’s not. Acer Swift 3 is easily the most powerful laptop for budget ever built beats Intel-powered laptops that cost twice the price. The quality of its display is its biggest weakness however, I was pleasantly surprised by the value Acer was able to fit into the 14-inch, budget laptop.

Are there alternatives?

The Acer Swift 3 is one of the first devices out of the gate to support AMD’s brand-new Ryzen 4000 processors, but it’s not the last. All kinds of devices starting from ThinkPads as well as Gaming laptops are now sporting eight-core processors, even though Swift 3 is the most expensive model. Swift 3 remains the cheapest model to be announced.

Other laptops that fall within this cost range comprise those from the Dell Inspiron 14 5000 and the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14-inch, however, neither have the level of performance that the Swift 3 Ryzen edition offers. An alternative to that of the Dell G3 comes with the best graphics card and is able to be set as high as six processors. It’s a larger laptop, however, and has much shorter battery life.

Finally, Chromebooks offer an excellent value for money for the price. They’re not as efficient and won’t be able to run the same programs, however, they are a good alternative to Pixelbook Go is a good choice. Pixelbook Go costs $649 and is a lot more screens, and offers a remarkable battery endurance.

Will it be around for a long time?

The Acer Swift 3 is fairly robust and has up-to-date components. It’s expected to last for between four and five years before it begins to show signs of age. Acer’s warranty, which is limited to one year, will not be much help in this regard, however.

Should you purchase it?

Yes. For the most value for money, Acer Swift 3 is the best choice. Acer Swift 3 dominates the other models.
